All laboratory employees are required to be trained on the hazards of their workplace. This training is to take place
This safety training has two parts - general online training modules and site specific training modules.
Online
Register for the Chemical Hygiene & Hazardous Waste training track in Ability LMS. You and your employees will be notified via email if any of your online training modules are overdue.
Site-Specific
Site-specific training modules are to be performed regularly for each employee. Site-specific training needs to be documented, and specific for the laboratory operations. The goal of site-specific training is to give the PI an opportunity to discuss in detail safety procedures specific to their lab operation with every employee. A sample site-specific training template is located here: Site Specific Training Template Documentation of both online modules and site-specific training records should be available to inspectors. These can be paper or electronic copies of training records.
In order to make the Chemical Hygiene Plan a legal document, principal investigators must add laboratory-specific SOPs to their individual safety plans. As an administrative control, it serves as a way for PIs to ensure they are apprised of their employee’s activities, and take the opportunity to discuss safety in a structured format.
Special storage, use, and handling precautions are necessary in order to control hazards associated with compressed gases and cryogens. In addition, the University has defined procedures for proper purchasing and return of cylinders.
The formaldehyde safety program is designed to meet the MIOSHA Occupational Health Standard for Formaldehyde, Part 306. Training is required for anyone included in the program.
Chemicals of Interest: laboratories using or storing chemicals identified by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as potential security risks (XLSX) need to be reported to EHS (355-0153) within 60 days of purchase. More information
By December 2022, ChemInventory software will be rolled out to all departments, allowing facilities to create and maintain chemical inventories that are automatically reviewed for DHS Chemicals of Interest.
