Pesticides (WPS)
-
Program Description
The US Environmental Protection Agency's Worker Protection Standard applies to pesticide use and related farming tasks in the agricultural production of plants. See regulatory details at http://pesticideresources.org/wps/.
WPS is aimed at reducing the risk of pesticide poisonings and injuries among agricultural workers and pesticide handlers. The regulation includes requirements for:
- pesticide safety training,
- notification of pesticide applications,
- use of personal protective equipment,
- restricted entry intervals following pesticide application,
- decontamination supplies, and
- emergency medical assistance.
- The WPS does not cover pesticide use in groundskeeping, golf courses, building maintenance, or animal husbandry.
The training program covers employees and students conducting research-related or plant production activities in areas where pesticides are applied.
In addition to the training program covering employees and students, MSU has WPS requirements which go above and beyond EPA regulations for applicators employed by MSU. These requirements include in-house training covering these elements. To learn more about these requirements, please review the Certified Pesticide Applicators page.
