Lockout/Tagout

MIOSHA General Industry Part 85 The Control of Hazardous Energy Sources, commonly referred to as Lockout/Tagout or LOTO, is designed to prevent the unexpected release of hazardous energy. This applies to all energy types: electrical, mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, chemical, and potential (heavy items that are suspended, or under tension). Any time an individual is required to perform work that could lead to exposure to these hazardous energy sources, the system must be shut off, de-energized, and the controls or energy supply locked in the off position.

Part 85 requires Employers to develop an Energy Control Program, which details the specific Energy Control Procedures, employee training, and periodic inspections used to ensure these energy sources are rendered safe prior to any potential exposure. The Michigan State University Energy Control Program can be viewed below. Please contact MSU EHS at 355-0153 or ehs@msu.edu for more information or to conduct an evaluation of your work.
