Decontamination Examples
Contact MSU EHS 517-355-0153 to evaluate equipment that contained radiation or chemicals prior to preparing for decontamination.
Decontamination of Biosafety Cabinet for Certification
- Remove contents from cabinet
- Don chemical resistant gloves, lab coat, and splash goggles
- Spray down the inside of unit with freshly made 10% bleach solution
- Let sit for 10 minutes then wipe to air dry
- Spray down the inside with 70% Ethanol thoroughly to remove bleach residue and avoid corrosion of stainless steel surfaces
- Wipe out excess and allow to air dry – repeat if needed
- Attach completed Equipment Release Form to front of the unit.
- For decommissioning/moving biosafety cabinet, contact EHS. A certifier must come to gas decontaminate the unit prior to removing it from the lab.
Decontamination for Decommissioning/Moving a Freezer
- Unplug the unit to prior to cleaning.
- Heavy ice buildup – leave unit overnight with proper drainage or absorbing materials.
- Don chemical resistant gloves, lab coat, splash goggles
- Spray down the inside of the freezer with freshly made 10% bleach solution
- Let sit 10 minutes then wipe to dry
- Spray freezer down with clean water or 70% ethanol to remove bleach residue and avoid corrosion of surfaces
- Wipe out excess and allow to air dry
- Store unit unplugged with the door ajar to avoid mold
- Attach completed Equipment Release Form to the front of the unit.
