New Chemical Safety and Hazardous Waste Training

October 29, 2025 - L. Pittsley

MSU Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) is updating several safety training courses to better align with regulatory requirements and ensure users receive information specific to their job responsibilities. These updates will launch at the end of October 2025.

What’s Changing

The previous combined Chemical Hygiene, Laboratory Safety, and Hazardous Waste course included both an initial and an annual refresher component.

To improve clarity and reduce redundancy, this content has been divided into three focused courses:

  • Hazard Communication (HazCom) Training – Required every 3 years for personnel who work with hazardous chemicals outside of a laboratory setting (e.g., maintenance, custodial, trade shop, and other non-lab employees).
    • Laboratory personnel only need to take this course once as a prerequisite to Chemical Hygiene Training.
  • Chemical Hygiene Training – Required annually for laboratory personnel.
  • Hazardous Waste Training – Required annually for anyone who generates, labels, or manages hazardous waste.

Each course includes updated regulatory content and MSU-specific safety practices, ensuring that employees only complete the training relevant to their work. Because the new courses are more focused, overall training time should remain the same or decrease, even for those assigned multiple courses.

What to Expect

  • Current (legacy) users: You’ll receive your normal LMS reminder when your current training is due. At that time, you’ll automatically be directed to the updated courses.
  • New users: You’ll be automatically assigned the appropriate courses based on your role and will have 30 days to complete it once assigned.
  • Previous completions will remain valid until their normal expiration date.
