The system a unit (laboratory, department, etc.) uses to store SDSs can vary:
If asked, every lab member must know how and be able to access the SDSs for any chemical they work with. The system adopted must provide easy access to SDSs for hazardous chemicals used in the lab.
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is a document containing chemical hazard identification and safe handling information and is prepared in accordance with the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard and the Michigan Right-to-Know law.
The Michigan Right-to-Know law requires that units and/or PIs keep SDSs in a systematic and consistent manner.
To obtain SDSs, search online for the chemical specific to the manufacturer and product ID number. You may keep a repository of downloaded SDSs in a common access folder on a shared drive. Ensure that everyone working in the lab knows how to access this.
